Contaminated

Photographs by Herminio Rodríguez

The Contaminated exhibition consists of a series of 78 portraits taken by photographer Herminio Rodríguez of members of communities affected by pollution emanating from fuel-burning plants in the town of Peñuelas, located in southern Puerto Rico. Other prominent figures from Puerto Rican civil society, the artistic, sports, and political classes have been captured by Rodríguez's lens, joining this call for environmental and social justice.

Photographer Herminio Rodríguez comments on this photography project:
“My specific goal is to create a photography campaign to denounce and raise awareness about the situation facing the Tallaboa Encarnación neighborhood in Peñuelas, where its health is threatened by the ash dump adjacent to the community. In general, I think the campaign also serves to highlight the importance of protecting the environment and how the abuse of our resources is more harmful than helpful. I could summarize this work as a type of environmental activist photography, which, if I'm not mistaken, is the first time I've found a concept or idea that, through photography, I can contribute my medium to environmental conservation.”
