Marsi Caraballo | Skins

Marsi Caraballo presents a series of hanging, three-dimensional works composed of circles of discarded paper. Her work conveys a message of awareness about recycling paper and other materials that would otherwise end up in the trash. Her work creates deconstructed images and colorful patterns on organically molded fabric that resembles scaly skin.

“With her work, artist Marsi Caraballo aims to send a meaningful message, addressing the excesses and waste that result from the graphic everyday life characteristic of any consumerist society. Pieles, through thousands of spheres made from recycled paper, creates surfaces that give the illusion of scales on a body and provoke a closer look to discover the layers of this skin. Each scale is a reminder of environmental awareness and the waste of printed materials.” Dr. Ana Rebecca Campos, curator of the exhibition.

The exhibition includes photographic images depicting the practical use of the pieces; there will also be a performance in which dancer and choreographer Sorely Muentes experiments with the sound and movement of the paper circles in her installations.

Marsi Caraballo, a designer by profession, graduated from the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras Campus with a concentration in Fine Arts and from the Central School of Visual Arts in San Juan. She has exhibited her work in the United States and Puerto Rico.

On display until September 29, 2024.
